Spruitnet - Vakantie 2005


Holliday 2005 Hello, I am Megan Spruit. When I was six months old, my parents took me along on a holliday where we rented a Narrow Boat. Lovely! My parents called it a holliday, but I simply liked every day of it.		Vakantie 2005 Hallo, ik ben Megan Spruit. Toen ik zes maanden oud was ben ik met mijn ouders gaan varen op een Narrow Boat op de kanalen van Engeland en Wales. Leuk joh! Mijn papa en mama noemen dat vakantie, maar ik vond gewoon elke dag leuk.
England is far, far away. We went there by car. First we had to drive to France which took about four hours. Then we went on a train which drove through a tunnel and after this it took four more hours to go to Penkridge, mainly becouse a big			Engeland is best wel ver weg. We gingen met de auto eerst naar een heel ver land, Frankrijk, volgens papa en mama. Dat was al vier uur rijden. Toen gingen we op een trein die door een tunnel reed en in Engeland moesten we nog vier uur rijden voor we in Penkridge waren, vooral door een file bij Londen die heel erg lang duurde.

What is a Narrow Boat? That's fun! A Narrow Boat is a very small boat, specially build for the channels which were build during the 18th century in England, Wales and Scotland. These channels have very narrow locks, which are all 7 foot wide. Mum and Dad told me that's about 2 meter and 10 centimeter wide. So, all narrow boats are also 2 meter and 10 centimeter wide and between 15 and 34 meter long. On the inside the boats look like a caravan, or better: three caravans glued together. Every narrow boat has a bedroom, a small badroom, a kitchen and a salon with a table and one or two bunks. We rented the Katrina, the shortest narrow boat of the Teddesley Boat Company from Penkridge, just above Birmingham. Real nice people who really try to help you with your hollidays. This narrow boat was not adjusted for babies of children. If you look around, there are boating companies who rent boats which include babybeds and nettings around the boat. For children who can walk but can not swim yet, this might be very save, but since I could not walk yet I did not need this. If one can only crawl there is really no possibility to get overboard.		Wat is een Narrow Boat? Da's leuk! Een Narrow Boat is een hele smalle boot, speciaal gebouwd voor de kanalen die in de 18e eeuw zijn aangelegd in Engeland, Wales en in Schotland. Deze kanalen hebben hele smalle sluisjes die allemaal 7 voet breed zijn. Volgens papa en mama is 7 voet breed zo'n 2 meter 10. Alle boten zijn dus 2 meter 10 breed en tussen de 15 en 34 meter lang. Van binnen is het net een caravan, of eigenlijk drie caravans achter elkaar geplakt. Een narrow boat heeft een slaapkamer, een badkamertje, een keukentje en een salon met een tafel en een of twee banken. Wij huurden de Katrina, de kortste narrow boat van Teddesley Boat Company uit Penkridge, net boven Birmingham. Hele aardige mensen die heel erg met je meedenken. Deze narrow boot was niet speciaal aangepast voor babies. Als je zoekt, zijn er wel rederijen die boten hebben met een kinderbedje aan boord en netten rondom. Voor kinderen die kunnen lopen maar nog niet kunnen zwemmen is dat laatste misschien wel erg veilig, maar aangezien ik toch nog niet kon lopen was dat nog niet nodig. Als je alleen maar kunt kruipen kan je echt niet overboord stappen.

Inside is, from front to back, the salon, the kitchen, the bathroom, the sleeping room and the steering compartiment. Steering is mainly done while standing out in the open.			De Katrina, een van de narrow boats van de Teddesley Boat company. Voorop is er ruimte voor krap twee personen om te zitten. Binnen heb je, van voor naar achter, de salon, de keuken, de badkamer, de slaapkamer en de stuurruimte. Overigens sta je hoofdzakelijk buiten bij het sturen. Eigenlijk drie caravans achter elkaar geplakt dus.
Give me the British! Over 60% of the British believed our flag to be a French flag. Unbelievable! We explained everyone that this is really a Dutch flag, but unfortunately, the knowledge of the Britisch about flags is not that well developed.			Geef mij de Britten. Iets meer dan 60% dacht dat wij een Franse vlag voerden! Aan iedereen hebben wij uitgelegd dat het hier toch echt om een Nederlandse vlag gaat, maar blijkbaar valt de kennis van de verschillende landsvlaggen nogal sterk tegen.
Baby on board Well, after all, I am still a baby, so the whole idea of living on a boat scared me just a bit. Turned out this really was not necessary. I could crawl around in the living room. Mum and dad did not let me crawl on the front part of the boat, but this would have been easily possible! But usually I slept while we moved from one location to the next. I never knew it was so lovely to sleep by the sound of a diesel engine. I craved for this for weeks after we returned home.		Baby aan boord Nou ben ik natuurlijk nog maar een baby, dus het hele idee van varen op een boot leek mij eigenlijk nogal eng. Maar dat viel reuze mee. In de Salon kon ik lekker rondkruipen. Van papa en mama mocht ik niet alleen op de voorplecht, hoewel ik vond dat dit best kon. Maar meestal sliep ik als de boot aan het varen was. Je moest eens weten hoe lekker je kunt slapen bij het geluid van een stampende dieselmotor! Thuis heb ik hier nog weken naar terug verlangd.

Sometimes I loved to enter a lock this way and showed this by loughing loudby, but sometimes I was just a bit impressed by the locks and I had to cry a little bit.			Heerlijk aan de voorkant van de boot lekker even in het zonnetje zitten. De ene keer vond ik het invaren in een sluis prachtig en kraaide ik van plezier, de andere vond ik het eigenlijk maar eng en moest ik een beetje huilen.
Boating According to my mum and dad, boating is really easy. Normally, you can't even turn the boat in the canal,		Het varen Volgens papa en mama stelt het varen niets voor. Je kunt normaal gesproken niet draaien in het kanaal, niet
can't run aground, there is no current, no tides, no summer or winterheight but alway beautifully still water on the same height. Therefore, you do not need someting like a steering license or likewise. The progression during boating is so slow, you can't even break something. Even I could do it, just look.			vastlopen, er is geen stroming, geen getijden, geen zomer- of winterhoogte maar altijd mooi stilstaand water op dezelfde hoogte. Vandaar dus dat je geen vaarbewijs nodig hebt. Je vaart zo langzaam dat je eigenlijk niets kapot kunt maken, mocht je ergens tegen aan varen. Zelfs ik kon het, kijk maar.
And where would we go? Luckily, my smart parents had bought some good maps. That is possible in the boat		En waar vaarden we dan zoal heen? Gelukkig hadden mijn slimme ouders goede kaarten gekocht. Dan kan gewoon
yard or in any shop alongside the canal. Just take a look: on the map you can see the locks, the distances, but also where the shops are and the pubs. With mummy and daddy I usually boated from 09:00 until 12:00 after which we went for food in a local pub until three o'clock. Then we would sail to the next stop at 18:00 where we decided if we wanted to eat another meal. Sometime I could join my parents for an evening stroll around the countryside.			bij de rederij of bij elke shop langs het kanaal. Kijk maar eens goed: op de kaart kan je precies zien waar de sluizen zijn, wat de afstanden zijn, maar ook waar de winkels zijn, de pubs etc. Met ma en pa vaarden we meestal van 9:00 tot 12:00 en gingen dan eten in de pub tot 15:00. Als we zin hadden vaarden we nog tot 18:00 uur en bekeken dan nog wel of we wilden eten. Eventueel mocht ik 's avonds nog mee met een wandelingetje in de omgeving.

In deze uitstekende uitgave van Nicholson stond ook uitgebreid verhaald over de bezienswaardigheden in de buurt van de kanalen, zoals kastelen, oude kerken, musea, bijzondere gebouwen of middeleeuwse burchten.
